The Bin Chicken Story
What’s the Issue?
Textile waste is a significant contributor to landfill waste, with 93% of textile waste ending up in landfill, approximately 23kg per person annually (Planet Ark, 2021). With the rise of synthentic and non-renewable materials, and the decrease in quality material as a result of fast fashion, it has become increasingly difficult to recycle and reuse materials, and reduce the impact in the environment. Even more challenging, textile off cuts and scrap pieces are difficult to repurpose or reuse with varying fabric makes, sizes and cuts.
What are we doing?
We’re giving a new purpose to these scrap pieces through innovative means. As part of a collaborative partnership with Brisbane State Library for their Purpose Built exhibition, we designed the handmade Bin Chicken. These Ibis plushies are made from 100% recycled materials – a testament to our local wildlife and Australian culture. The Bin Chicken body is made from Recycled Cotton and filled with scrap materials, showcasing our commitment to sustainability and creativity in addressing waste through innovation.
